Thank you to everyone who made The 1st Annual El Paso Día de los Muertos Pitch Competition a success. Our goal was to create valuable connections between founders, investors, and key community partners to facilitate the strong business and investment growth in the Borderplex region. During the two-day event, participants attended a dinner, networking events, and a two round pitch event where the winning team received a $10,000 non-dilutive check to help spur their business’ growth.

Dan holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of New Mexico.

Alice has researched the creative industries for 15+ years. She has lived and worked in Europe, Mexico, and Central America, designed and taught university level courses ranging from Social Entrepreneurship to Environmental Ethics, and holds an MBA and PhD in Strategic Communication and Entrepreneurship.

He is currently Director of Investments at Bitwise Industries, a tech ecosystem activating human potential in underdog cities, an Advisor at Kern Venture Group, the largest venture fund in California’s Central Valley, and an Advisor at Density, an anonymous workplace analytics solution. He was most recently a General Partner at Cross Culture Ventures, and began investing at The Wonderful Company (f.k.a, Roll Global) where he became a Kauffman Fellow. He holds an MBA from the Darden School of Business, an M.Eng. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a BS from Morgan State University.

She is currently disrupting venture capital by building a new and inclusive capital model to empower Latinx founders starting with the EmprendeLatino Tech Accelerator in Albuquerque, NM. Lucrece is committed to the “Rio to Rockies” ecosystem that spans across her home state of New Mexico.

After founding two revolutionary business incubators in Houston, TX, Lucrece returned to home to develop the region’s nascent venture capital ecosystem. Having worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center prior to beginning her career in finance, she utilized that diverse background to develop the technology commercialization fund Camino Real Capital Partners.

Lucrece is a active across the New Mexico startup ecosystem, having served as Chair of the Coronado Ventures Forum, Venture Acceleration Fund Review Board, ABQid Mentor, BizMix Mentor and the BioScience Advisory Council. Lucrece began her career in Investment Banking for JPMorgan in 2006 after graduating with honors from the world’s leading Entrepreneurship program at Babson College with concentrations in Finance and Economics.

John Chavez has served as the President of the New Mexico Angels since 2008 and has been an active angel investor since 2003. He is also the Managing Director of Phase One Ventures, a start-up fund out of Santa Fe, NM, Managing Director of New Mexico Start-Up Factory I,II and III and a General Partner of NMA Ventures. Outside of the Angels, he is the President of Tafoya and Brainerd Partners LLC, a nationwide business development consulting firm. Prior to his work in consulting, Mr. Chavez was appointed Cabinet Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department by New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. During his six-year tenure as Tax Secretary he also served as the President of the Federation of Taxation Administrators for one year.

Elizabeth Wechsler Mata a shareholder of Blanco Ordoñez Mata & Wechsler, P.C. where she works in the firm’s Business and Real Estate Practice Group with an emphasis in the areas of intellectual property, business organizations, and commercial transactions. Elizabeth also serves as an adjunct professor at New Mexico State University, biennially teaching the course, “Intellectual Property for Engineers and Scientists.”

Ms. Mata assists with creating, organizing and restructuring business entities; documenting commercial transactions involving the buying and selling of real estate and other business assets; and addressing trademarks and related intellectual property matters.

Elizabeth holds a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from Princeton University and Juris Doctor from University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Jason is a healthcare investor with over eighteen years of experience, including eleven years in private equity and venture capital. He has a proven track record of successfully identifying and building high performing companies.

He is a current Kauffman Fellow making angel investments in healthcare and identifying an opportunity zone investment in Puerto Rico. Previously, Jason co-founded Mansa Capital Management, a private equity firm focused on early stage growth companies within the healthcare sector. He received his MBA at Stanford and worked at Deutche Bank and Salomon Brothers prior to business school. 

Jason is a member of the Board of Directors at Comunilife, a not-for-profit organization that provides health and human services and supportive housing to New Yorkers. He served on the Board of Directors at Acacia Network, a large (~500mm revenues) community-based organization in the healthcare, housing and substance abuse sectors. He co-founded the Amber Charter School Foundation and serves as the board treasurer.

Finally, since Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated Puerto Rico, he has activated his network to deliver healthcare relief to the island. Specifically, he organized a large, U.S. hospital system to deliver medications, supplies, and healthcare professionals to a distressed hospital in Puerto Rico.
